Did you ever have a hard time building a resume, which resulted in you not getting a chance for an interview? I experienced that too, and with my failures, I tried to explore different resume builders online to help me.

Thankfully, it allowed me to discover VisualCV.

VisualCV is one of the many resume builders you might have read on our comprehensive list of free and paid resume builders.

In this extensive (and unbiased) VisualCV Resume Builder Review, I will discuss my experience creating a resume using their website. I will also discuss the pricing model, support options, if any, and any other information.

After reading this review of VisualCV, you will have a clearer idea and know for sure if you should build your next resume using the platform.

So, let’s get started.

About VisualCV

VisualCV was founded by James Clift and Thomas Zhou in Vancouver, Canada, in the year 2014.

Since launching, VisualCV has built upon its core product with the introduction of resume analytics, resume websites, portfolios, cover letters, and more.

They also have been featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, CBC, and more.

The website is used by job seekers in more than 100 countries globally since it is available in nine different languages.

To date, more than 3 million people have used VisualCV to create more than 5 million resumes and CVs.

VisualCV Resume Builder

Before creating a resume with VisualCV you have to sign up first for their website. You can sign in either with your Google or LinkedIn account or sign up with your email.

VisualCV Resume Builder Sign In

I signed up with my Google account for this review. After signing up, you will be automatically redirected to a page where you can choose a template for your resume.

VisualCV Resume Templates

There are 18 templates to choose from. All of the templates can be used if you subscribe to their PRO Package (which we will discuss later):

  • Gallant.
  • Arya.
  • Avant.
  • Vienna.
  • Chloe.
  • ATS.
  • Modern.
  • Brooklyn.
  • Onyx.
  • Clair.
  • Air.
  • Oak.
  • Monaco.
  • Vida.
  • Corporate.
  • Standard — Free.
  • Monte (Active) — Free.
  • Slate — Free.

I chose ‘Slate’ as my template for this review, and I was then redirected to the page where I can edit my resume.

Before I can do that, VisualCV gave me a tour of the webpage to discuss the different features (you can also skip if you want).

Your dashboard is located on the left side of the screen. Each icon has a different function.

If you don’t want to make a resume from scratch, you can also upload a resume or use a sample content from VisualCV.

There are 9 sample contents to choose from, but note that this will override your existing resume (if you are currently editing one):

  • Business Development – Senior Level.
  • Civil Engineer – Senior Level.
  • Sales – Senior Level.
  • Executive Resume Example.
  • Marketing – Entry Level.
  • Property Management – Mid Level.
  • Retail – Entry Level.
  • Nursing – Mid Level.
  • Technical Support – Mid Level.

VisualCV Resume Builder Resume Templates

I decided to make a resume using the template that I have chosen for this review, and not upload an old resume or use any sample content.

Before anything else, this resume builder has two kinds of editors:

  • Basic Editor.
  • Visual Editor.

You can choose any editor at any moment.

VisualCV Resume Editors

The ‘Basic Editor’ is an editor wherein the different sections are shown for you to edit without any visual preview.

VisualCV Basic Editor

Clicking a section would show fields for you to input different information.

VisualCV Basic Editor Section

The ‘Visual Editor’ is an editor that allows you to edit and see an overview of your resume.

To edit the resume, you have to hover over each part. I’d like to note that the name and email that you used to sign up for VisualCV will be the default contact information on your heading.

Don’t worry, and you can change it by clicking the ‘edit’ icon.

VisualCV Visual Editor Section

The editing concept is straightforward and simple to use. You get an overview of your resume; then you proceed to enter your different work experience and education.

You can either add a work experience by clicking the ‘+’ button or delete one by hovering over that part and clicking the ‘trash can’ button.

VisualCV add or delete work experience

The ‘up and down’ arrows allow you to move one section of your work experience to the top or the bottom.

The same features are applied when you edit the education section.

Entering my details didn’t take me 10 minutes or so, and the process is straightforward. You can also add another section, such as:

  • Summary.
  • Custom Dated Section.
  • Charts.
  • Text Section.
  • Portfolio.
  • Skills.

VisualCV adding sections

This isn’t all to it with VisualCV’s resume builder, though. Let’s go back to the different icons on the dashboard to personalize the resume.

VisualCV Appearance Section

Clicking the ‘Appearance’ button allows you to make changes to the font style, font size, font color, and the margins of your resume.

Under that button is the ‘Page Break’ button, which gives you options to separate each section by page.

VisualCV page break

Under the ‘Page break’ button is the ‘Settings’ button, which will give you the option to name and save your resume. I recommend doing this now and then for safety purposes.

VisualCV Settings

There is also a ‘Revision History’ button, which shows you the different versions of your resume based on how you edited it.

VisualCV Revision History

Last but not least, I also noticed that there’s a ‘Progress’ icon that computes how complete your resume is. The icon is located under the ‘Revision History’ icon.

VisualCV Resume Progress

I think what this may lack are details that describe what is missing on your resume.

Once satisfied with the details on your resume, you can either:

  • Share the link to your Resume.
  • Export it to Word or
  • Download your Resume in a PDF format.

However, you have to subscribe to VisualCV’s PRO Package to unlock sharing the link and exporting to Word. However, you can still download your resume in a PDF format, which is incredible.

VisualCV Resume Download

You will only be able to make one resume if you’re not in the PRO Package yet. We will be discussing the pricing in the next part of this article.

Other Features of VisualCV

Features of VisualCV

They also have different resources that can help entry-level users get more information on how to jumpstart their careers further:

Final Thoughts  Should You Build Your Resume Using VisualCV?

I just used the free version of VisualCV to build my resume, and it amazes me that I didn’t encounter any problems at all. The editing tools were very basic, straightforward, and easy to understand.

I was able to create a resume in less than 10 minutes, plus I love the fact that you can see the overview of your resume while editing.

I would have loved for tips to be given while building a resume to understand further how I can complete it.

I think they should allow users to use their cover letter builder for free just for experience purposes. They can just remove the download button so users would have to pay for their service.

I love that the pricing is transparent and that there are a lot of resources to help users. They even allowed me to download a PDF of my completed resume, which is incredible.

I would recommend the VisualCV resume builder to anyone reading this because the tools are effortless to use, and you can still personalize your content.
