Education is an important aspect of each person’s life. However, it is worth not forgetting that it is just a prelude before further development, an intermediate stage preceding career building.

Therefore, universities should not transmit knowledge for the sake of knowledge itself but keep in mind the ways of its practical application, consider students as future competitors on the labour market who would seek good workplaces in prestigious companies.

In this article, I have outlined the main things educators can do to prepare young people especially college graduates for the future.

Developing the Key Skills

1. Problem-Solving

Businesses seek employees who would be able to solve their problems, work in stressful conditions, find ways out of challenging situations. Young people will not acquire relevant skills by just listening to professors’ explanations and taking notes at lectures.

The theory should be supplemented with practice, real cases, trial, and error experience so that students could learn to cope with roadblocks.  

Professors should create scenarios of situations that students may face at their future workplace, offer different developments and ask learners to make some steps. Hypothetical problems may be addressed individually or in a team.

For example, persons studying architecture may be asked to plan large-scale construction without exceeding a rather modest budget, to find ways to purchase lacking supplies.

Of course, there will and should be mistakes. After all, young people come to a university to learn, hone their skills and work on problematic issues. The educator’s task is to explain that failure is a normal thing on the way to success, it only hardens a person’s will, makes one stronger and provides valuable experience.

2. Teamwork

Many students do not like group projects. However, such activities boost teamwork skills which are highly appreciated at any enterprise, prepare young people for communicating with supervisors, colleagues, and clients.

Professors should invite learners to collaborate, distribute responsibilities, exchange ideas, inform each other about the work done. For example, students may plan an event or develop a creative project together.

An educator needs to track teamwork and get feedback.  One should ask learners about their experience, emotions, and impressions, whether everyone was feeling comfortable when working in a group, whether participants reached a mutual understanding and had no conflicts.

Over some time, young people will feel more relaxed in a team environment, show initiative, leadership qualities, learn to look at things from their peers’ perspective.

3. Written Communication

Academic writing is very different from business correspondence. Young specialists will not write essays and term papers at the workplace. It is much more important for them to know how to compile reports and e-mails.

Professors should create more opportunities for development in this area, ask young people to summarize their projects and performance in writing.

4. Strong Work Ethic

In many respects, an employee’s attitudes towards a company influence one’s professionalism. When a person is inspired, feels like a part of the greater whole, perceives colleagues like a family, it is easier for one to work productively and contribute to common goals. Many young people think that career building is only a way to earn money.

Since studentship is the time of intensive personality formation, educational institutions have an opportunity to instil higher moral values, influence learners’ worldview and help them to love what they do. Then work will cease to be a burdensome duty and start to bring joy.

In the conditions of intense business competition, an increasing number of organizations have no choice but to hire fresh college grads. The latter are employed either during their campus interviews or they hunt for a job on their own as soon as they leave college. Here, the opinions vary greatly: while some believe that young employees are behind seasoned ones when it comes to their potential, others give them employment with open arms.

Employing young professionals is not so bad especially when employers know what benefits they can get. Unfortunately, along with many advantages, there are also disadvantages associated with hiring fresh graduates. For all employers, to see which way the wind is blowing, it is necessary to weigh all the pros and cons provided further.

Arguments in Favor of Employing Inexperienced Grads

Those who have recently left college have some advantages. Because of these pros, many companies tend to hire them right after they obtain a diploma. Let’s consider the factors which contribute to employing the youth.

1. They Don’t Require High Salaries

As college graduates have just come to the industry, the level of their experience is far from perfect. Therefore, they don’t claim a highly-paid job straight away. For businesses, these employees are cheaper than seasoned ones. Since experienced professionals ask for high rewards, turning to recent grads is not a bad idea.

In any case, this doesn’t mean that businesses offer too low salaries, this means that they offer them what they deserve following their competence and talents. Hiring freshly graduated candidates is an attractive opportunity for startup businesses that cannot afford to pay much money.

2. They Have Fresh Views and More Potential

Since recent college graduates are new to the industry, they probably can inspire some bright ideas.

Unlike seasoned workers who know the business inside out and probably have already run out of their creative energy, they are more likely to think outside the box. This will give many benefits to your company.

Moreover, they can draw your attention to many problems which aroused long before so that the new ideas and a completely different way of thinking can be implemented in your enterprise.

3. They Show More Serious Attitude to Work

Since they are new to their position they take it more seriously and are more into it than seasoned workers.

The latter usually take their work for granted, don’t like pushing themselves too hard, and thus are more likely to opt-out of their tasks. This is mainly because of their huge professional experience.

Unlike them, fresh grades don’t mind doing overtime and involving in many projects as, in such a way, they want to show themselves off and get on the right side of their boss.

4. They are Very Comfortable with the Use of Techs

Contrary to the common belief that modern youth uses the Internet only for cutting loose for social media and obtaining professional assignment assistance, such as personal statements writing services, and so forth, they handle innovations very well, and their knowledge is not limited to what is mentioned.

Indeed, young individuals are more productive at work than old professionals who got used to sticking to out-of-date methods. The latter ones are less interested in gaining new knowledge and acquiring updated info about new techs.

Unlike them, recent grads expand their knowledge in this field and thus are more likely to bring more novelties to your company.

5. They Grasp Everything Easily

Since recent grads know very little about your organization, they are very enthusiastic about learning different sorts of things about it.

You will not hear any complaints from them: they tend to work hard and show your eligibility for a particular position.

Another Side of the Coin: Cons of Hiring a College Graduate Without Work Experience

Like with everything else, there are also disadvantages in offering jobs to fresh college graduates. As they are by and large inexperienced workers, they are more likely to mess up a contract.

Therefore, it is crucial to handle them properly; otherwise, your business may lose profits, customers, etc. Below, the main cons of the issue are discussed.

1. They Have Very High Expectations

They think that if they work harder, the employer will pay them more. However, they forget that they are not experts and thus cannot be paid like the latter.

If they try their best for a while, only then they can ask for a raise. Otherwise, it is inappropriate and unfair to others to ask for a bigger reward without a strong reason.

2. They Have Poor Communication Skills

All people entering the workforce experience a lack of diplomacy.

No matter how long they have been mastering their communication skills in a higher educational institution, knowing how to communicate and doing this properly are completely different things. College graduateses are likely to face many difficulties related to this issue from the very beginning of their careers.

3. They are Not Professionals Yet

As college graduates have just entered the workforce, they cannot be treated like professionals: before they can become ones much training is needed. Very often they just don’t know what they should do and what they shouldn’t. This is because they are new to the place. They may fail to dress properly and can disobey senior staff. Indeed, it requires much time and effort to train them.

All-in-all, hiring inexperienced workers has the benefits many businesses are aware of. Those hunting for a job straight upon graduation usually lack relevant knowledge and diplomacy. However, it is not an issue if there are good employee onboarding programs.

For startup and small business, hiring relatively low-paid workers is a huge benefit; therefore, they welcome recent grads with great pleasure.

And they have many reasons for this: young individuals like college graduates learn easily, are serious about their first work, have a fresh approach to common things, and are good experts in new techs.

All of these allow them to add some value to the businesses.
