If you’re looking to work for one of The USA’s top-tech firms, you’ve got plenty of company. These jobs are in huge demand by millions of people hoping to be at the forefront of the digital revolution. But, with so many people chasing positions at these companies, is it possible to get a foot in the door?

Luckily, we’ve done some research for you so keep reading to discover the pre-applicant assessments used by America’s top tech firms.

1. Google

As the world’s top tech company, you’d expect Google’s applicant testing strategy to be filled with complex algorithms that nobody’s heard of.

The reality is, though, that it’s quite straight forward. After sending off your resume and passing the telephone interview, you’ll be invited for an interview.

The interview focuses on questions related to general cognitive ability, leadership, role-related knowledge, and “Googleyness.”

In the past, Google was renowned for using crazy brainteaser interview questions, such as “how many golf balls can fit on a school bus?” but, they’ve now removed them from the process.

Applicants applying for technical positions are expected to solve technical problems in real-time using Google’s custom-made interview app.

2. IBM

IBM operates in over 170 countries, hiring talent for a multitude of different roles however, their employment strategy follows the same process across the business.

After passing the initial online application, applicants are invited to complete the IBM IPAT test; the company’s bespoke cognitive assessment test. This is one of the most challenging online tests out there, however, you can practice IBM IPAT test help to ensure you ace it!

The test is composed of a numerical series test which includes aptitude question topics like:

  • Basic Algebra
  • Conversions of weights and measurements
  • Fractions
  • Ratios
  • Speed, Distance and Time

Candidates who applied for the ‘Graduate Strategic Analytics Consultant’ role will also need to complete an SHL Test.

After passing the IBM IPAT test, you’ll be invited to an assessment center for pre-employment assessments to do a variety of exercises, including a presentation and group activities.

3. Microsoft

Applicants to Microsoft can expect a vigorous recruitment process since the company is committed to working with the brightest talent. The first step of the process is an online application. After passing this stage, you’ll be expected to complete up to 3 online tests (assessments).

Depending on the position that you’re applying for, these may include a situational judgment test (SJT), technical aptitude test, and inductive reasoning test. Although this might seem scary, like everything in life, practice makes perfect.

4. Amazon

As the world’s biggest online retailer, you can be sure that Amazon receives its fair share of job applications every day. However, did you know that over 60% get rejected due to failed aptitude tests?

To make sure that you’re part of the 40%, familiarise yourself with Amazon’s aptitude tests and the style that of testing that they use. In between completing your online application and being invited to an assessment center, you’ll be expected to complete the online tests.

5. Apple

Much like Google, Apple is a company that we’d all expect to have a high-tech hiring strategy but, the reality is quite surprising.

Apple’s hiring process doesn’t include any online tests and, instead, applicants begin with an online application followed by a telephone interview and, finally, an assessment center.

The pre-employment assessment center consists of a role-play activity, group exercise, interview, and presentation with some very specific Apple-focused interview questions thrown in there!

6. HP

At first glance, you could be led to believe that HP is another company who’ve chosen to buck aptitude testing in favor of a hiring strategy similar to Apple and Google’s.

The company doesn’t have a dedicated online test stage as part of their recruitment process. Does that mean you should put your feet up instead of preparing, though?

Not at all! Rather than formal aptitude testing, behavioral and personality tests are conducted throughout the interview and other assessments. There are also some ability tests to assess candidates’ verbal and numerical reasoning abilities.

7. Intel

Intel’s is known for being at the forefront of innovation and need staff who can help them maintain this image. After passing an online application, you’ll be asked to complete one of Intels bespoke assessment tests.

At the assessment center, applicants are expected to do an interview, group activities, and in-tray exercises. Behavioral and personality testing will be conducted throughout the interview and questions will be focussed on assessing your technical knowledge.

8. Salesforce

Salesforce is the world’s number one CRM platform, used by both small businesses as well as huge enterprises such as Unilever. They’re looking for staff who can help them connect companies to customers in a more meaningful way and have an unrivaled rewards scheme for those who prove they can do that. To get there, though, you’ll need to pass a situational judgment or strengths assessment test (SJT).

The objective of the pre-employment assessments is to judge how well you react to real-life work situations. The test consists of 100 questions, assessing 32 different workplace skills.

9. SAP America

SAP America is an American company with a parent organization in Europe, known as SAP SE. During their hiring process, applicants are expected to complete a series of aptitude tests including a situational judgment test (SJT), personality test, verbal assessment, and mathematical reasoning test.
